Soccer fans can play along with their favorite international stars in this interactive adaptation of the 64-match, 2006 FIFA World Cup tournament held in Germany between June and July. Using an enhanced version of the graphics engine featured in 2005's FIFA Soccer 06, the game includes 125 national teams and all-new modes of play. The main mode focuses on qualifying and advancing through World Cup competition in the country's 12 official stadiums, while Global Challenge lets players re-create 40 historic moments from past World Cup tournaments. The game also introduces a context-sensitive shooting system that takes into account multiple variables, including the athlete's shooting ability, the amount of defensive pressure, and his proximity to the goal. Animations for players on the pitch have been expanded, with signature-style moves for nearly 100 top-ranked superstars, from Claudio Reyna to Frank Lampard to Xavi. Throughout each mode, players have the chance to unlock rewards such as legendary athletes and licensed apparel for use in multiplayer games. Up to eight players can challenge one another in custom ladder matches.

Konami's acclaimed soccer franchise continues with World Soccer Winning Eleven 9, which for the first time includes online support for ranked matches and tournaments against players from around the world. The development team has tweaked the controls, formations and animations for the ninth installment, but longtime fans will focus instead on the changes to the Master League mode, where players can embark on multiple seasons with increased management options. Players can decide to build a team from the ground up or guide an existing club, including new additions Chelsea and Arsenal, in its goal to become league champion. Recruiting is a key part of the Master League mode, as athletes on each team will suffer injuries, grow older and eventually retire. To help prevent a club from sinking in the standings, players will be able to negotiate with literally thousands of athletes to develop the next crop of superstars. Other featured modes include League Play, Cup, Training, and Memorial Match, with the latter tracking key statistics in head-to-head battles for up to 20 rivals. The PlayStation 2 version adds connectivity support for the PSP, allowing handheld owners to trade game information back and forth between the two systems.
