The "06" edition of EA Sports' annual college basketball game is designed to emphasize the importance of tactics and defensive pressure. The game introduces the "Lockdown Stick" feature, which allows defensive players to line up with the ball handler and block his path. Once the ball handler has been "locked down," players can try to strip the ball away from him directly, or use the expanded "Floor General" system to set up a defensive formation to try to trap him, breaking up the play and promoting a turnover.Other new features include an enhanced 30-year Dynasty mode, which puts emphasis on the concepts of Senior Leadership and league awareness. Gamers can more easily follow the play of teams across the country and adopt special game plans against tough opponents. Once again, there are many teams to follow, as hundreds of real-life schools are featured, allowing gamers to take the reigns of their favorite recurring contenders, or lead a more obscure alma matter to an unprecedented national championship.

NHL 2K6 introduces an "On-the-Fly Coaching" system, designed to allow gamers to give basic strategic commands to their entire line at once. On offence, players may be coached to pinch the defensive formation, or to crash the net when the goalie is having trouble holding on to his rebounds. On defense, the line can be ordered to fall back into tight protection around the goal, or to spread out to try to move the puck out of the zone at almost any cost. Another prominent new game mechanic concerns players filling their roles on the ice. Certain players may be designated as "Enforcers," as noted by a red "E" icon. With enough hard hits and aggressive checks, Enforcers can intimidate players on the opposing team into performing below their normal abilities -- they'll be noted by a blue "I" (for "intimidated") icon. Of course, too many aggressive moves will draw penalties, and leave the Enforcer's team a man down. In addition, a new "ProControl" scheme allows players to focus on passing and puck movement, and the right-stick initiated "Intense Contact Control" (dirty tricks) system from the previous year's game returns. Also returning in NHL 2K6 are fan favorite features such as franchise management, professional presentation, and full representation of all the teams and players of the league, as based on roster status shortly before the game's release.

Alter the appearance of your character right down to skin tone, or change up their swing in order to tweak their game. One of the most successful sports series on all of gaming helps kick off another new console with this launch title. While following the updated gameplay design of the preceding console and PC versions of Madden 06, this Xbox 360 edition of the game was designed to make use of the more powerful platform with more realistic player models, new graphical effects, and three times the number of animations. Aside from the presentational improvements, the game is designed to offer the solid gameplay that has already made Madden a fan favorite for over a decade. The game's "Vision Cone" feature simulates the QB's field of view with a highlighted cone that fans out in the direction of the current intended receiver, to encourage the player on offense to commit earlier in the play, and to telegraph his passes much more realistically than in earlier versions of Madden. The new "Precision Passing" system allows quarterbacks some direct control over the accuracy of their passes. By bumping the left analog stick or D-pad in the desired direction as the ball is passed, QBs can aim high, low, in front, or behind their receivers. A new play-calling interface is introduced in this Xbox 360 version of Madden 06, and the game uses picture-in-picture displays for television-style staging. The game's franchise mode has been refined as well, for efficiency and depth. As usual, this edition of Madden includes all the teams, stadiums, and players of the real-life NFL (thanks to an exclusive license that takes effect for the first time this year). Multiplayer modes are supported for Internet-connected 360 gamers, though the Xbox Live subscription service.

Gretzky NHL 2006 incorporates an all-new Wayne vs. Wayne mode where gamers earn "99 Time" and can temporarily activate Gretzky to go six-on-five against opponents or alternately defend against him when an opponent activates 99 Time. To challenge the skill levels of all hockey videogame fans, Gretzky NHL 2006 offers the Gretzky Challenge with unlockable, playable versions of Gretzky from his days as an Edmonton Oiler, Los Angeles King or New York Ranger. Additionally, hockey fans can play a quick game in either Quick Start or Exhibition Mode, act as owners in Season Mode, or compete against friends or other hockey fans in head-to-head play via Ad Hoc connectivity and Infrastructure Mode. With new gameplay modes, features and audio commentary, Gretzky NHL 2006 blends the look, feel, and passion of hockey with hard-hitting and intense arcade-style gameplay.
